BICYCLE HELMET SAFETY
TIPS FOR PARENTS
The
Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute estimates that helmets reduce the risk of all
head injuries by up to 85%. Bicycle helmets are required by law in Florida.
SOME FACTS:
- Helmets should have a sticker indicating that they meet federally mandated
standards. Look for a CPSC, ANSI, ASTM or Snell B-95 sticker.
- Helmets should fit securely: Low on the forehead, just above the eyebrows.
It should fit snugly, but comfortably and should not move around on the head.
- Helmets should be replaced at least every 5 years or as soon as the child
outgrows a proper fit.
- After a crash, the bike helmet should be replaced, even if it doesn’t look
damaged.
- Parents can get more information from the National Highway Transportation
Safety Association: www.nhtsa.gov
On July 29th the Safety Council participated in the Fifteenth Annual
Back-to-School Crunch for 2006 at The Palm Beach County Health Department. The
Safety Council gave out 200 helmets at this event. We would like to thank the
Tenet Foundation for their donation that enabled us to participate in this
wonderful event.
